Hold a frozen lemon (or really any cold object) will immediately engages our sense due to the cold temperature. The texture and smell of the lemon will also stimulate our sense. This can bring our thinking brain out of the emotional spiral and back into the present moment.
When the face or body is exposed to cold, the parasympathetic nervous system activates, slowing the heart rate and reducing physiological arousal. This is a biological reflex, known as the “dive response”.
What to do:
· Keep a lemon (or another small citrus fruit) in your freezer.
· When anxious, press it to your face and behind the beck, hold it in your hands, smell it deeply.
· Alternatively, splash cold water on your face or hold an ice cube under running water.
· Notice your breathing as you do this — slow, deep breaths will increase the effect.
The frozen lemon hack is a practical tool to help you manage intense feelings in the moment. Managing is different from seeking a longer-term solution. If struggle with high anxiety or self-hard thoughts and urges, please keep the crisis numbers handy. Seek support: reach out to friends and family, consider therapy. This simple tool is not a replacement for professional help.
