What to Expect in Your First Therapy Session

Meeting someone new can feel uncomfortable—especially when you’re planning to discuss deeply personal topics. I get it—I've been there! Having a sense of what to expect can help ease some of those nerves.

Let me walk you through what a first session with me looks like. Keep in mind that every therapist has their own style, so this is specific to my practice.

Before Your Session

Once you book an appointment, you’ll receive an online intake form. This short form helps me gather some basic information about you, such as your:

  • Birthdate, address, and contact details.
  • Reason(s) for seeking therapy.
  • Level of distress you’re experiencing.
  • Any previous counselling experiences, including what was helpful or not.
  • Medications you’re currently taking and their purpose.

You’ll also be prompted to review some key policies, like confidentiality, risks and benefits of therapy, and cancellation terms. We’ll go over these together during your first session, so you can ask any questions or share concerns.

Arriving for Your Session

If your appointment is in person, you’ll be greeted by our receptionist and can make yourself comfortable in the waiting room until I come to get you.

If your appointment is online, you’ll receive a “Thanks for Booking” email when you schedule, followed by an email with a link 30 minutes before the session. You’ll have the option to test your device’s mic, speakers, and camera. If you’re using an iPhone or iPad, you’ll be prompted to install the Jane Online Appointment app.

What Happens in the First Session

Once we’re seated in my office or online, I’ll start by explaining what you can expect during our session. I might also ask if there’s anything specific you’d like to share or ask.

We’ll review your intake form together, starting with confidentiality and its limitations, before diving into what brought you to therapy. Some clients arrive with clear goals:

  • “I want to feel comfortable leaving my house again.”
  • “I’ve been struggling with anxiety since a car accident.”
  • “I’ve felt down for a while, and someone suggested therapy might help.”

Others may not have a clear idea of what they need yet, and that’s perfectly okay. If this sounds like you, we’ll explore what brought you to book the session and work together to figure out your goals over time.

Building a Connection

The first session is all about getting to know each other. You’ll get a sense of my style and personality, and I’ll learn more about you and your needs.

Research shows that the relationship between therapist and client is the most important factor in effective therapy—more important than the type of therapy itself. It’s crucial that you feel comfortable with me. If for any reason you don’t, I’m happy to provide recommendations for other therapists. You won’t hurt my feelings.

I hope this gives you a good sense of what to expect in your first session with me. If you have any questions or want to book an appointment, feel free to reach out. I’d be honoured to work with you!
